A new scammer is fraudulently using the Confero name. Michael Jones falsely claims that he is an employee of Confero. He asks for personal information, then asks the consumer to cash a fake check and send him funds.
The scammer claims that he has a “secret retail research paid study” that pays $500 weekly. The fraudster requests name and mailing address, then mails the consumer a fake check and letter (with the Confero logo on it).
Confero does not have an employee by this name and Confero never mails checks, asks shoppers to deposit checks or asks shoppers to send money to Confero.
The fake letter says that the purpose of the assignment is to evaluate retails stores/post offices in your area. The letter asks the consumer to deposit a check over $1000 and says to keep $500 as “wages.”
Please do not fall for this scam or ones like it. Shoppers who are interested in assignments may register to become a shopper at conferoinc.com, and Confero does not request personal information via email.
Please note the following warning signs:
• Confero never sends checks to mystery shoppers, or payments in advance. Confero pays by PayPal only, and sends payment once the mystery shop assignment is completed. There is never a requirement for the shopper to send money to Confero.
Look for typos. The scammer mentions sending an email to conferroinc@usa.com. Confero’s email format is conferoinc.com.
Please do not respond or provide any personal information to a person who claims to be with Confero. Please do not text them. Do not provide your social security number or other identifying information. Confero does not contact consumers by letter or other means to ask for personal details such as social security number to be emailed or texted.
The letter asks the consumer to send a photo of the deposit slip they use. As always, please do not share any personal information including your bank account information.
779-445-4631 and 706-998-2297 are the numbers listed for the fraudulent Michael Jones. These phone numbers do not belong to a Confero employee. Please do not call or text him; he is not affiliated with Confero.
We thank the consumer who brought this to our attention, so that we can warn others of this scam.
